英 in Chinese / Japanese...

In Chinese, Japanese, and old Korean, 英 can often be confused or read as a short name for England (this character is the first syllable of the word for England, the English language, the British Pound, and other titles from the British Isles).

In some contexts, this can mean “outstanding” or even “flower.” But it will most often read as having something to do with the United Kingdom.

This is not the most common way to say hero, courage or bravery but you may see it used sometimes.

I strongly recommend that you choose another form of courage/bravery.

英雄 is the best way to write hero in Chinese and Japanese - especially for calligraphy.

英雄 is also the name of the Chinese movie titled Hero starring Jet Li.

The first character means brave (it can also mean British or English but not in this case).
The second character means heroic but also suggests a male person.
My Japanese dictionary also defines this as “a great man.”

英氣 is a way to write heroic spirit in Chinese.

This may be an arrogant thing to hang on your wall.

英達 is the name Indar in Chinese (Mandarin).

英吉 is the name Ingi in Chinese (Mandarin).

英卡 is the name Inka in Chinese (Mandarin).

英國人 is the traditional Chinese and Japanese way to write British person, Briton, English person, Englishman, Englishwoman, etc.

In modern Japan, the middle character has been simplified, making it 英国人. This same simplification is used in mainland China as well.

英信流 is the Japanese martial arts term, Eishin-ryu.

This can also be pronounced Hidenobu-ryu. The direct meaning is something like, hero faith school (or school of heroic faith).

英格拉西亞 is the name Ingrassia in Chinese (Mandarin).

大英聯合王國 is the Chinese name for the United Kingdom.

英屬維爾斯群島 is the Chinese name for the British Virgin Islands (overseas territory of the United Kingdom).

無双直伝英信流 is the modern way to write the Japanese martial arts term, Musō Jikiden Eishin-Ryū (iaido style).

Sometimes the second Kanji is written as 雙, and the fourth Kanji is written 傳, making the full title 無雙直傳英信流. See the other version of this title if you want that traditional version.
