柔道 is the martial art invented in Japan and known as “Judo” around the world.

Translated directly, it means “Gentle Way” or “Flexible Way"

More about Judo

Kodokan Judo

 kou dou kan juu dou
Kodokan Judo Scroll

講道館柔道 is the title for the Kodokan Judo school of Japanese martial arts.

 xióng shī
Lion Scroll

雄獅 is how to write “lion” in Chinese.

 wǔ shī
Lion Dance Scroll

舞獅 is the Chinese title for “lion dance.”

舞獅 is the traditional Chinese costumed dance seen at festivals (especially Chinese New Year), ceremonies, and often at the beginning of Chinese martial arts events.

 shi shi mai
Lion Dance Scroll

獅子舞 is the Japanese title for lion dancing.

This refers to the Japanese version borrowed from traditional Chinese culture. The Japanese version almost always features a red-faced lion with a green cloak with a white pattern.

 shī zǐ
 shishi
Lion Scroll

獅子 is how to write “lion” in Japanese Kanji and Korean Hanja.

獅子 is also lion in Chinese, but more informal. The more literary title, 雄獅, would be better for Chinese calligraphy.

 shī zǐ wáng
 shi shi ou
Lion King Scroll

獅子王 is the Chinese title for “The Lion King” (also associated with the Disney movie).

This has the “Lion King” meaning in Japanese however, not associated with the movie you are thinking of. 獅子王 is also a Japanese surname that romanizes as Shishiou.

 shī xīn
Lion Heart Scroll

獅心 is “Lion Heart” in Chinese.

The most famous use of this title would be “Richard the Lionheart,” also known as King Richard I of England who lived 1189-1199 A.D.

 shi shi shin ou
Lion Heart Scroll

獅子心王 is the Japanese version of the nickname for King Richard the First. It means “Lion Heart King.” The full title is “リチャード獅子心王” in Japanese, or “Richard Lion Heart King.”

If you want a special version of this or a related Lion Heart title, just contact me.

 shī zi róu dào
 shi shi juu dou
Lion Judo Scroll

獅子柔道 is the title for Lion Judo.

This should be considered just a Japanese title, though it is pronounceable and makes sense in Chinese and Korean - so I have included the romanization for those languages above.

Heart of Judo

 róu
 yawara

Heart of Judo Scroll

This 柔 Kanji literally means flexible, pliable, gentle, or yielding.

柔 is also the first Kanji of the Japanese martial arts titles of Judo and Jujutsu (Jujitsu). In those cases, it's pronounced “ju” in Japanese. However, alone, the classic pronunciation is “yawara.” Some translate this Kanji (in the context of martial arts) as “The Heart of Judo.”

Please note that this just means pliable, gentle, and yielding in Chinese and old Korean Hanja. They do know what Judo and Jujitsu are but if this character is seen alone in China or Korea, people generally will not think of the martial arts context.

All of our calligraphy wall scrolls are handmade.

When the calligrapher finishes creating your artwork, it is taken to my art mounting workshop in Beijing where a wall scroll is made by hand from a combination of silk, rice paper, and wood.
After we create your wall scroll, it takes at least two weeks for air mail delivery from Beijing to you.

Allow a few weeks for delivery. Rush service speeds it up by a week or two for $10!

When you select your calligraphy, you'll be taken to another page where you can choose various custom options.

A nice Chinese calligraphy wall scroll

The wall scroll that Sandy is holding in this picture is a "large size"
single-character wall scroll.
We also offer custom wall scrolls in small, medium, and an even-larger jumbo size.

A professional Chinese Calligrapher

Professional calligraphers are getting to be hard to find these days.
Instead of drawing characters by hand, the new generation in China merely type roman letters into their computer keyboards and pick the character that they want from a list that pops up.

There is some fear that true Chinese calligraphy may become a lost art in the coming years. Many art institutes in China are now promoting calligraphy programs in hopes of keeping this unique form of art alive.

Trying to learn Chinese calligrapher - a futile effort

Even with the teachings of a top-ranked calligrapher in China, my calligraphy will never be good enough to sell. I will leave that to the experts.

A high-ranked Chinese master calligrapher that I met in Zhongwei

The same calligrapher who gave me those lessons also attracted a crowd of thousands and a TV crew as he created characters over 6-feet high. He happens to be ranked as one of the top 100 calligraphers in all of China. He is also one of very few that would actually attempt such a feat.
