White Bear / Polar Bear Scroll

白熊 literally means “white bear.”

白熊 is a way to say “polar bear” (Ursus maritimus) in Chinese and Japanese.

This can also be the Japanese surname Shirokuma.

熊 is the way to write “bear” (as in the animal) in Chinese, Japanese Kanji, and old Korean Hanja.

If you are a bear fanatic, this is the wall scroll for you.

熊 is not specific to species, such as panda bears, polar bears, brown bears, etc.

If you need a more specific title, just post a contact me.

熊貓 is how to write “panda” in Chinese.

熊貓 is kind of a generic term that is applied to all pandas. When most people think of panda bears, they are really thinking of the “giant panda,” which has black and white fur.

The literal meaning of these characters is “bear cat.” Chinese do think of pandas as “cat-like bears.”

 pan da

パンダ is how to write “panda” in Japanese.

It's a phonetic title, written in Katakana that sounds almost exactly like the English word Panda.

Note: Because this title is entirely Japanese Katakana, it should be written by a Japanese calligrapher.

Wolverine Scroll

貂熊 art the Chinese characters and Japanese Kanji for wolverine.

Also known as “gulo gulo,” glutton, carcajou, skunk bear, or quickhatch. The wolverine is the largest land-dwelling species of the family Mustelidae (weasel family).

北斗七星 is a Chinese, Japanese Kanji, and old Korean Hanja title for Ursa Major, The Big Dipper, or The Great She-Bear.

You will also see the shorter title of 北斗星, and sometimes just 斗 is used to refer to the dipper when the astrological context is established.

Use Hard Work to Overcome Adversity

 kè kǔ nài láo
Use Hard Work to Overcome Adversity Scroll

刻苦耐勞 is a Chinese proverb that suggests that you should always bear hardships and work hard.

Some will translate it as a suggestion to be assiduous and long-suffering.

My favorite is to use this to remind myself to be hard-working and capable of overcoming adversity.

 dà xióng māo
Giant Panda Scroll

大熊貓 is how to write “giant panda” in Chinese.

大熊貓 is specific to the “giant panda,” which has black and white fur. Not to be confused with other types of smaller pandas in China.

The literal meaning of these characters is “great/big bear cat.” Chinese do think of pandas as “cat-like bears.”

Note: In Japanese, they only express Giant Panda in Katakana, which is ジャイアント パンダ” (Jaianto Panda). So we have not included that for wall scroll orders.

Realize Your Ambitions / Embrace Your Ambition

 taishi wo Idaku
Realize Your Ambitions / Embrace Your Ambition Scroll

大志を抱く is a Japanese proverb that suggests you should embrace, pursue, and realize your ambitions.

The first part means ambitions or aspirations.

The last part means to embrace or to hold in your arms.

Here's the character breakdown:
大志 (taishi) ambition; aspiration.
を (o) particle
抱く (idaku) to embrace; to hold in the arms (e.g. a baby); to hug; to harbor/harbour; to bear (e.g., a grudge); to entertain (e.g., suspicion); to sleep with; to sit on eggs.

Note: Because this selection contains some special Japanese Hiragana characters, it should be written by a Japanese calligrapher.

Win / Victory

 shèng
 shou

Win / Victory Scroll

勝 is a single character that means to win or be victorious.

This can also be translated: To overcome; success; to beat; to defeat; to surpass; superior to; to get the better of; better than; surpassing; superb.

In another context, this can mean beautiful (scenery); scenic spot; or scenic beauty.

In Taiwanese Mandarin, this can be pronounced with the first tone (sheng1) and mean: Able to bear; equal to (a task).

In Japan, this can also be the name Masaru.

In Korea, this has the same meaning but can also be the surname Sŭng.

All of our calligraphy wall scrolls are handmade.

When the calligrapher finishes creating your artwork, it is taken to my art mounting workshop in Beijing where a wall scroll is made by hand from a combination of silk, rice paper, and wood.
After we create your wall scroll, it takes at least two weeks for air mail delivery from Beijing to you.

Allow a few weeks for delivery. Rush service speeds it up by a week or two for $10!

When you select your calligraphy, you'll be taken to another page where you can choose various custom options.

A nice Chinese calligraphy wall scroll

The wall scroll that Sandy is holding in this picture is a "large size"
single-character wall scroll.
We also offer custom wall scrolls in small, medium, and an even-larger jumbo size.

A professional Chinese Calligrapher

Professional calligraphers are getting to be hard to find these days.
Instead of drawing characters by hand, the new generation in China merely type roman letters into their computer keyboards and pick the character that they want from a list that pops up.

There is some fear that true Chinese calligraphy may become a lost art in the coming years. Many art institutes in China are now promoting calligraphy programs in hopes of keeping this unique form of art alive.

Trying to learn Chinese calligrapher - a futile effort

Even with the teachings of a top-ranked calligrapher in China, my calligraphy will never be good enough to sell. I will leave that to the experts.

A high-ranked Chinese master calligrapher that I met in Zhongwei

The same calligrapher who gave me those lessons also attracted a crowd of thousands and a TV crew as he created characters over 6-feet high. He happens to be ranked as one of the top 100 calligraphers in all of China. He is also one of very few that would actually attempt such a feat.
