Quick links to words on this page...

This is a two-character word used often in Chinese, old Korean, and ancient Japanese to express beauty.
I've had a few requests for a "two-character beautiful" and this is by far the best word. This is not a common word for an Asian person to want on a wall scroll. However, you will see it commonly used as an adjective in phrases, stories, and titles throughout magazines and signage in China.
This word can also be translated as gorgeous or lovely.
Note: This word is not common in modern Japan.

In Chinese, this is the title for the art of beauty, as applying makeup or cosmetics to enhance beauty.
Note: In Japanese and Korean, this takes the meaning of beautiful face or beauty of figure or form. Be sure you know who your audience is, and have matched the desired meaning.

This is how to write beautiful princess in Chinese. The first two characters mean feminine beauty, or rather a way to say beautiful that only applies to women. The middle character is just a connecting character. The last two characters mean princess.

This can be translated as beautiful view, beautiful scenery, or beautiful sight.
Note: Not a commonly-used word in modern Japanese.

This word written in Chinese or Korean Hanja can also mean "grace of character" or "noble virtue".
There is a slight variation in the modern Japanese Kanji form of the second character. If you want the modern Japanese version, please click on the special Kanji shown to the right instead of the button above. Note that the traditional Chinese form is still readable and understood by Japanese people (it's the ancient Japanese form anyway).

This is the best and most polite way to express "beautiful woman" in Chinese.
Note: Some people may like the simple 2-character ![]()
way to express this, but there are some bad connotations with that, so better to stay with this longer and more respectful title.

This word is often used to describe the beauty of a woman. It's also the first character in the word for "beauty salon" which you will see all over China.
For a bit of trivia: The title for the "USA" in Chinese is "Mei Guo" which literally means "Beautiful Country". This name was bestowed at a time before Chairman Mao came to power and decided that China didn't like the USA anymore (even though we fought together against the Japanese in WWII). But these days, Chinese people love Americans (but have distaste for American politics and policy). But I digress...
This is also how "Beautiful" is written in Japanese Kanji and Korean Hanja.

Danger: Means prostitute in Japanese!
Mandarin: xuán rén
Japanese: kurouto
Korean: 현인

This literally means "Mysterious Person/Woman". In Japanese this is associated with a "geisha", which matches this definition of "mysterious woman". However, this is the colloquial way to say "professional geisha" or "expert prostitute" in Japanese. It therefore might not be what you want on your wall.
Notes: This is a "Japanese only" term, though a Chinese person who sees these characters will think of a geisha or an alluring Japanese female musician.
While not often seen in Korean Hanja, this would mean a "dark woman", as in a woman that you cannot easily see through.

We don't really have a word like this in English, but these two characters create a word that means "strong and beautiful". It could also be translated as "healthy and beautiful".
Note: This is a word in Chinese and Korean, but it's also the family name Takemi in Japanese. The characters hold the same meaning in Japanese, but It's kind of like having the English name Stillwell, when few people would perceive the meanings of still and well.

This is the best way to say "strong woman" in Chinese.
Grammar in China is a bit different, so these three characters literally read as "female strength person" or "woman strong person". This might sound funny in English, but this is a natural-sounding title in Chinese.

This is the very old way to say woman in Chinese. Common in ancient China. It actually refers to the scarf or head wrapping worn by virtually all women at that time.
This is kind of a cool way to say Woman now. The actual gender character alone on a wall scroll would actually just look like a fancy sign for the woman's restroom (WC).
If you are curious, the character to the right directly means female or woman. This is useful information if you are a woman in need of a toilet in China.

This is a cool and somewhat ancient way to say woman hero in Chinese. This word is used in modern times to refer to an outstanding woman or a woman with great accomplishments.

The scroll that I am holding in this picture is a "regular size"
4-character wall scroll.
As you can see, it is a great size to hang on your wall.
(We also offer custom wall scrolls in larger sizes)
Professional calligraphers are getting to be hard to find these days.
Instead of drawing characters by hand, the new generation in China merely type roman letters into their computer keyboards and pick the character that they want from a list that pops up.
There is some fear that true Chinese calligraphy may become a lost art in the coming years. Many art institutes in China are now promoting calligraphy programs in hopes of keeping this unique form
of art alive.
Even with the teachings of a top-ranked calligrapher in China, my calligraphy will never be good enough to sell. I will leave that to the experts.
The same calligrapher who gave me those lessons also attracted a crowd of thousands and a TV crew as he created characters over 6-feet high. He happens to be ranked as one of the top 100 calligraphers in all of China. He is also one of very few that would actually attempt such a feat.

| If you have not set up your computer to display Chinese, the characters in this table probably look like empty boxes or random text garbage.
This is why we spent hundreds of hours making images so that you could view the characters in the "Beautiful Woman" listings above. If you want your Windows computer to be able to display Chinese characters you can either head to your Regional and Language options in your Win XP control panel, select the [Languages] tab and click on [Install files for East Asian Languages]. This task will ask for your Win XP CD to complete in most cases. If you don't have your Windows XP CD, or are running Windows 98, you can also download/run the simplified Chinese font package installer from Microsoft which works independently with Win 98, ME, 2000, and XP. It's a 2.5MB download, so if you are on dial up, start the download and go make a sandwich. | ||||||
