Gohonzon Scroll – Nichiren Shu (Meiji Era, 1900)

Nichiren-Shu Gohonzon - Meiji Era 1900 - Buddhist Mandala Print - Wall Scroll close up view

Close up view of the artwork mounted to this silk brocade wall scroll

Experience the profound presence of Nichiren Buddhism with this fine art giclée reproduction of a historic Nichiren Shu (日蓮宗) Gohonzon (御本尊), believed to have been inscribed around 1900 during the Meiji era. Revered as both a mandala of devotion and a masterpiece of Japanese calligraphy, this sacred image bridges over a century of Buddhist practice and tradition.

What is a Gohonzon?

In Nichiren Buddhism, the Gohonzon is more than calligraphy—it is a spiritual mandala embodying the Lotus Sutra’s essence: Nam Myōhō Renge Kyō (南無妙法蓮華経). Surrounded by protective deities, bodhisattvas, and enlightened beings, the central inscription represents the awakening of Buddha nature within all living beings. For practitioners, it is a mirror of enlightenment; for admirers of art, it is a timeless symbol of harmony and wisdom.

Historical Significance

This Gohonzon originates from the Nichiren Shu tradition, the oldest and most direct lineage of Nichiren’s teachings. Inscribed during Japan’s Meiji period (1868–1912), a transformative era of modernization and cultural exchange, it reflects the enduring continuity of Nichiren’s vision through times of change. The year 1900 situates it firmly within a time when Japanese temples were working to preserve and transmit authentic Buddhist practices worldwide.

Artistic Features

Written in dynamic, flowing brush calligraphy, the composition radiates balance, depth, and spiritual strength.

The interwoven characters draw the eye inward, symbolizing the interconnectedness of all beings and the eternal Dharma.

Each print is carefully produced using archival-quality giclée techniques, faithfully capturing the depth of the original ink on handmade parchment-style paper.

Why Choose This Gohonzon Print?

For Practitioners: Provides a focal point for chanting Nam Myōhō Renge Kyō, meditation, or daily Buddhist practice.

For Collectors: A historically authentic example of Nichiren Shu mandala art, offering a tangible connection to 19th–20th century Japanese Buddhism.

For Aesthetics: Its bold black calligraphy against warm parchment tones creates a striking centerpiece in meditation spaces, altars, or art collections.

About My Giclée Prints

This is more than a business for me — it’s a passion. I create fine art prints because I love the process of pairing sacred and historic designs with the perfect paper and printing technique. I experiment until everything feels just right. For me, quality will always matter more than profit. (In fact, there’s a fine art print shop down the street charging twice as much as I do — so maybe I’m doing it wrong, but you get to benefit from my folly!)

James Cowart and Canon Giclee Printer

A photographer that I admire, Jeremy Cowart, and his Canon imagePROGRAF PRO Series printer.

Dedication to Quality

It took years — and a few costly missteps — to find the right printer. My first one worked well with delicate handmade papers, but the dye inks faded too quickly. My second was a massive HP DesignJet that constantly jammed on the specialty papers I love. After thousands of dollars lost, I finally invested in the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO Series — and it was worth every penny.

This remarkable printer has over 18,000 nozzles and can fire more than 32 million ink droplets per second. Combined with 12-color Canon Lucia Pro pigment inks, it produces an incredibly wide color gamut, velvety gradients, and museum-quality precision that ordinary printers simply can’t achieve.

Archival Excellence

I print exclusively with authentic Canon Lucia Pro pigment inks, which are both archival and UV-resistant. Independent tests rate them at 95+ years without noticeable fading — meaning your print will last a lifetime if properly cared for. Of course, like any fine art, it’s best to keep it out of direct sunlight.

Why My Prints Are Different

  • Printed on handmade Japanese and Chinese fine art papers, chosen for their unique textures and beauty.

  • Created with dedication to craftsmanship, not mass production.

  • Offered at prices far below what you’d pay in a commercial fine art print shop.

Every print I make is something I would proudly hang in my own home — because for me, this is about sharing art that matters.

Want a customized wall scroll or custom-sized print? Just contact me!

I can print this larger, on the paper texture of your choice, and give you whatever silk brocade colors you want. Ready-to-frame prints can be delivered in a few days. However, it does take several weeks for custom wall scrolls. Either way, it's worth the wait if you want something really custom and unique.
