This artwork was giclee printed on very special handmade "grass-leather paper". It has fibers and husks purposely pressed into the finished paper. The paper is quite expensive compared to typical Asian art papers, but the results are worth it.
A Gohonzon is an “object of devotion.” This Gohonzon is meant to be part of a Nichiren Buddhism altar.
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is written down in the center of the Gohonzon in bold characters. The phrase is a fragment of the Lotus Sutra and expresses a vow to believe in our Buddhahood and take action in alignment with this vow.
On either side of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo are characters that represent the various positive and negative tendencies and energies within life. All such energies are intrinsic to life, but harmonized by the law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, all reveal an enlightened aspect and function to create value and happiness.
This was printed on handmade paper with pressed-in natural fibers. The UV-resistant ink should last upwards of 90 years if not hung in direct sunlight. The print was built into a handmade wall scroll. If you want a custom Gohonzon, please contact me.
