This artwork was painted on very special handmade "grass-leather paper". It has fibers and husks purposely pressed into the finished paper. This gives artwork a very natural and antique look.
This single character is a way to express "serenity" or "tranquility" in Japanese and Chinese. It can also be translated as calm, serenity, tranquil, undisturbed, or serene. It can be pronounced as shizu or sei in Japanese and jing in Chinese.
You may also see this written in the 
form, which is the more ancient Chinese way. You will see
