Scroll design question

Post by atl.genbukai » Dec 23, 2013 9:06 pm

Hi, I'm interested in ordering a custom 8-character scroll, and I'm wondering if it's possible to have it laid out in 2 offset columns to make the length more reasonable (and more closely match some other ~60" scrolls I have). If so, how should that be noted in the ordering process. Thanks much,

Adam

As a clarification, what I'm looking for is the calligraphy "never forget your beginner's spirit (first resolution)" brushed by Imai-Shihan. Thank you for your help.

So you want the column staggered to make the wall scroll longer?

That's no problem, just put a note to that effect in the "Special Instructions" tab when you customize the wall scroll.

Shorter, actually. The mockup in the customization workflow estimates a scroll length just north of 75". I think two columns that overlap 2 characters rather than all four should be able to decrease the length, as well as be pretty good-looking. Also, I attempted to add another question regarding the characters shown for the scroll, though it seems to have branched into a separate thread. Question was the difference (if any) between the meaning of 翔心忘るべからず, 翔心忘る可からず, and 常にお忘れぬべからず. Possible to see which is best meaning for "never forget your beginner's spirit?" Thanks much,

Adam

Oh, right, got you. Just look under the "Size/Columns" tab. Change it to "2 Columns". That will make it a lot shorter.

I just finished some research on your other question. That answer has been posted on that thread.

Cheers,
-Gary.

I saw your notes, but I'm back to thinking you're asking about staggered columns (not just two columns).

If I understand correctly, you want it to look like this staggered version:

Is that right?

Otherwise, it would look like this standard two-column arrangement:

First link is spot on. That's exactly what I was picturing. Do you think that's the way to go? Or just a single column and smaller characters to limit the length?

That works. I've sent that info on to the calligrapher. This will give it a lot of extra length (which I think was your goal). Staggered columns are not common, but also not unusual in Asian calligraphy. I've seen them many times before, and they look good.

Hi Gary,
Scrolls arrived today, and they are awesome. Custom scroll looks great, and I can hardly believe that you discounted the 無心 scroll I also ordered. The blemish is only noticeable because I knew to look for it. Thank you very much for your efforts on this order. These will look great in the dojo.
