custom chop and wall scroll request

Post by dansjkd » Aug 30, 2013 7:41 pm

Hello there! I wanted to make a custom request for a chop and two wall scrolls. I am in the planning stages of opening a Jeet Kune Do school so I wanted to have my own custom chop for rank certificates. My full name is Dan Sorber. I also wanted to have two wall scrolls made up... one to hang on either side of our mook jong. One should say "using no way as a way" and the other "using no limitations as limitations" as depicted in his core symbol which I have included here. Thank you

以無法為有法,以無限為有限

Yi3 wu2 fa3 wei2 you3 fa3, yi3 wu2 xian4 wei2 you3 xian4

Here's the link where you can order a wall scroll with these characters:
http://www.orientaloutpost.com/options.php?cname=%E4%BB%A5%E7%84%A1%E6%B3%95%E7%82%BA%E6%9C%89%E6%B3%95%EF%BC%8C%E4%BB%A5%E7%84%A1%E9%99%90%E7%82%BA%E6%9C%89%E9%99%90&cimg=20197+28961+27861+28858+26377+27861+20197+28961+38480+28858+26377+38480

For the chop, Dan Sorber = 丹•索伯尔 so that's 4 character to enter if you want the whole name. I kind of recommend you do either your first or last name, as altogether, they will be hard to read as a first and last name. The names will be run together and look like nonsense until the reader realizes it's a full western name.

You can order the chop here:

Thanks Gary. One more question. What do I put for the title/meaning part? Just my last name?

Hi again Gary. I actually need it to be two separate wall scrolls. That link looks like its setting it up to be on one.

You can enter what you want (first, last, or full name).

Dan = 丹 (1 character)
Sorber = 索伯尔 (3 characters)

If you do the full name, it gets sticky for another reason - In Chinese, surname is first, so it should be "Sorber Dan". Or would you want it in Western order? However, a chop should be arranged in vertical columns starting from the right and proceeding left (messes up the idea of western order).

If it was me, I'd just get "Sorber".

I have a few name Chops, and the one I use most often is my surname by meaning (my name being Westergren, which is "West Forest" in Swedish). If I added my given name, the chop would be very confusing. But with "West Forest" (Xi Lin), I have what looks like an artist's pen name, or maybe a real Chinese name.

Here's that phrase broken into two wall scrolls for you:

Hi Gary. My last name is a Bavarian dialect that means 'inhabitant of the marsh'. Not as cool as I would hope lol. Is there something equivalent in Chinese?

Wow, there's actually a famous Chinese novel that more or less has that title. In English, it gets called "Outlaws of the Marsh", and way off the original meaning, "All Men Are Brothers".

In Chinese, it's literally "Marsh" or "Water Margin".

The full title is 水浒传 (Shui Hu Zhuan), but often written in short form as 水浒 (Shui Hu).

I will talk to the native translator and see if this makes a cool pen name for a chop. My instinct says this is going to be a great option that will make a Chinese person who reads your chop take a step back and say, "That's a cool name".

If you take this name, you should probably read this Homer's-Odyssey-like novel about 108 warriors near the end of China's Three Kingdoms Period.

Oh cool! Thanks for the info Gary! I will look for a copy of the book. Let me know what your translator says.

Hi Gary,
I ordered my chop awhile ago but due to moving it went into storage and I never got the chance to look at it. I feel stupid for asking, but how is it suppose to be oriented? I am learning Cantonese, but my own chop looks like a top down view of a hedge maze to me, lol

The scrolls are gorgeous by the way. VERY satisfied with them!

Don't mean to be rude but if anyone could help I'd appreciate it.

Sorry, I've been gone on a long training cycle with the U.S. Army in preparation to head to Afghanistan later this year (so much for being a "reservist").

Your version is this: 水浒 (Shui Hu)

Hi Gary. No problem I completely understand.
However, I am still not sure how the chop should be oriented. Is it right in the picture or do I need to turn it?

The image didn't download the first time around... ...now I saw it...

Turn 90 degrees counter clockwise from the image you presented.

Usually, there is an inscription on the chop. If right handed, your thumb will rest against that inscription as you use the chop.
