Calligraphies from Edmonton, AB

Post by mwallace » Mar 4, 2011 10:07 am

I reduced the pictures to 600 pixels high. I e-mailed the calligraphies to you at xxxxx@gmail.com along, with the widths. Please let me know if this is okay or if I need to used this forum. This forum will only accept 1 picture/post. I have 39 pictures. Margaret Wallace

OK, I see your email. I need to remove that email address from your last post, as that's my only private email (my orientaloutpost.com email received over 1 Million spams in the last two years! - I just counted the junk left on my server yesterday when I did some email server clean up).

I'll try to work on all of these later today. Got to take my 5yo daughter to the doctors office today, as she's got a high fever. I'm probably going to work through the weekend, so I'll find time soon if not today.

Sorry about our forum's limitation. It's actually set at a maximum of 10 images attached to any one post. That limits the robots who try to spam this forum with naughty images. I was not thinking of someone attaching 39 images for an art-mounting project when I set that 10-image limit.

OK, I finished them. I wish they looked better, but the lighting on your photos was dim, and there were weights and other things on the artwork to mask (I masked them poorly).

I don't do too many 41-wall scroll jobs, so I was overwhelmed anyway (spent a few hours on this)...

Follow each of these links to set up each wall scroll. There's lots of custom options available. I counted each one as 33cm (except for #27). Effectively, I am undercharging by $1 on most of them, but #27 will come out about $6 high, yet it will be shipped separately from all the others because of its size. It probably all comes out fair in the end. I've only finished coding prices into the website for the 33cm, 50cm, and 68cm sizes (sizes common for calligraphy). Someday I need to code for each centimeter of width.

The shipping costs are kind of built into the price of the scrolls, so the shipping charge on your invoice will just be $9.80 American. This is a different shipping scheme than we used about 3 years ago with your last big project. The effective price per wall scroll is probably just $3 more than last time. This does not even account for the difference in exchange rate between CNY and USD, so we're actually making less than last time.

When you place the order, you can either pay by credit card now, or select to pay by money order (international postal money order drawn on U.S. Dollars is great - I think that's how you paid last time).

All you need to do is enclose all the artwork in a box along with a note card that only contains your order number. Try to refrain from other notes in the box (I've got nobody in China who reads English at the moment, and a note could delay things while they find a fax machine, and send it to me in the USA and wait for a phone call back to find out what it says - yes, that happened last month). We're going to visually track your order through the process (that's why the images were important for this project) so no need to for numbers to be attached etc.

Once you have placed your order, ship your artwork to this address:

LI HONGLIANG
TONGZHOU DISTRICT, LIYUANZHEN
CUIPINGBEILI 18-111
BEIJING 101121
P.R. CHINA

Phone: 135-0122-3840

Please either mark it as "gift" or "documents" with "China" as the country of origin and "Chinese calligraphy" as the contents. This will avoid delays and keep the Chinese Customs Bureau from spending time trying to figure out whether duties or taxes are due.

If you have the means to print out the address in Chinese, here it is:

李鸿亮
北京市通州区梨园镇翠屏北里18号楼111室
北京 101121
中国 P.R.CHINA

Putting that on the face of the box may speed up delivery of your package to our workshop.

Insurance on the way to China is up to you. We'll cover insurance on the way to Canada within reason, but you have to tell me how much to insure it for. The higher the insured value, the more likely it is to raise the eyebrows of Canadian Customs. Theoretically, hand-painted artwork is duty-free, and this is artwork from Canada being re-imported when it comes back. However, a high insurance value could get some Canadian Customs agent hot and bothered to declare an amount of GST is due. Take it from a guy who drove 400 lbs of Asian art across the Canadian border a few years back. I learned a lot about GST on that trip.

Your order number is 13669

That's all you need to enclose on a note in the box. When you ship these to China.

Thanks!

Order ID:13669 from Edmonton

Post by mwallace » Mar 23, 2011 8:12 am

I wrapped the calligraphies in brown paper and wrote the ID on the outside of the brown paper in one of the tubes. There are 2 tubes of calligraphies that are taped together. They are to arrive in China by Canada Post on March 28. Margaret Wallace

They are mounting them right now in Beijing. We should be able to ship them on Monday if all goes well.

Your artwork arrived just in time for us to be done with the rush (overload) of work we built up during the Chinese New Years holiday. We've been late on a lot of projects recently, but yours will be ahead of schedule. Timing is everything.

I went ahead and deleted the "senior moment" posts.

We kind of default to wall scroll mounting. I've very rarely had anyone ask for their artwork to be done with a portrait mount. You would have gotten an "Are you sure?" message from me if you had.

Don't worry.

Cheers,
-Gary.

No problem.

By the way, try to use the "Post Reply" button instead of the "New Post" button when you reply. It will keep all that we talk about on one thread, and keep me from having "senior moments" (This forum is my notebook, and sometimes stands in for my brain).

It will probably arrive before then. I can't confirm at the moment, as we are shipping right now from Beijing, so I can't reach anyone. My master mounter is driving - theoretically, using your cell phone while driving is punishable by death in China.
FYI: If you crash and kill someone while on your cell phone, you are put to death in exchange (unless you are very rich or well-connected). As a result, nobody talks on their cell phone and drives in China. That's kind of brutal. However, after being run off the road at 65MPH on Friday by a guy in a big SUV whose vision was blocked by his huge smart phone, I wonder if China is on the right track.

If your artwork is not in the car, I suppose we can ship via EMS (Canadians call that Xpresspost). There would be an extra charge of about $75 for that.

Air Mail should only take two weeks (barring delay by Canadian Customs).

I'll pay the extra for faster delivery, if possible. Sorry for the late notice. If it is sent, I'll do something at this end. Margaret

I sent a SMS (text message) instructing that your package be ungraded to EMS if possible (if not already shipped by Air Mail). Thinking about it, delivery was possible by the 23rd, but that's a 50/50 chance. So EMS is the only way to nearly guarantee it.

I'll update you when I know how it worked out, and give you the tracking number.

Here are the EMS (Xpresspost) tracking numbers:

EE388160572CN
EE388160541CN
EE388160498CN

The large scroll went in a box by itself. The largest box available at China Post only fits 35 medium-sized wall scrolls, so we had to split that too.

I'll send a Paypal invoice for the extra charge for EMS to your email.

Cheers,
-Gary.

There's no place to call really. If you call the Xpresspost department of Canada Post, I expect they will have no useful information for you. The tracking info from the website will tell you what you want to know.

It happens all the time that we ship several packages at the same time, and they arrive on different days.

It's likely the other two will arrive tomorrow.
