Translate this chop mark?

Post by JHKIM » Apr 15, 2013 2:29 pm

Sorry for the poor quality impression - tried to clean it up digitally to make it easier. Any idea what it says? Thanks so much.

Not sure if I got all this lost in the shuffle or didn't match the order with the post. Order 16762 can you help? Thanks.

Yeah, we could not match that order up with anything. I was away on military duty, so I did not get a change to research and follow up on this. I finished that and flew to China this morning, so I'll pass this on to a translator here.

Sorry for the delay.

Just an update. PhotoBucket is banned in China (meaning, made to be inaccessible on purpose by the government). She could not see the image, and I did not save a copy on my computer. I'll send it via email to her or post it directly on this forum so she can see it once I return to the USA on Monday.

Thanks for the update Gary. I had no idea about photobucket being blocked over there.

Just got back to the USA and getting caught up.

It's hard to keep track of how many sites are banned in China. The obvious ones are FaceBook, CNN, BBC, Twitter, YouTube, and Google (English version of Google is banned, Chinese version now redirects to Hong Kong server, but most searches are blocked/banned). Getting to my Gmail account can be challenging as well.

Basically, any website that provides news, pornography, or free expression of ideas is subject to being banned.

Hopefully I'll have an answer for you soon.

These weren't readily-identifiable. I forgot the translator did not have her seal script dictionary with her in China (usually works here in the USA where I have about 5 variations of this kind of dictionary). She's trying to find one there.

Seems it's one of those Murphy's Law projects, just to figure out an artist's name.

Who needs encryption software when the world has been gifted with Chinese seal script? I've been trying to unravel this mystery for months and patience is just part of it. So it may take a little more time, that's understandable. If it helps...and you might already see this I think the first character (from left to right)is 昌 but of course that would be the last one if read the Chinese way right to left!

This one is just too hard. A translator spent an hour looking through a zhuan (seal) dictionary, but nothing matched up.

There are so many character variations, rare names, rare characters, and the difficulty of identifying seal script in the first place. In 221 B.C. when a standard set of characters started to emerge, there were something like 21,386 characters (many of them variations of the same characters). This has pared down to about 5000 (3000 are needed to be literate in Chinese). All the eliminated characters from 221 B.C. make this kind of task impossible sometimes.

Thanks for the reply and for trying. I do understand how difficult this can be and that you stopped the meter at an hour. Do you think another three to five hours would be sufficient to get a translation?
