Re: What does it mean? Please
Sorry for the late reply. I totally missed this post. You have "Chi" or "Qi", which can be defined as energy or spirit. Though it's more complicated than just that. Yours is a very stylized variation of the character. Other versions look like this: http://www.orientaloutpost.com/charimg.php?chars=27...

Yes, I know his son was taking over the family business, but I have lost track of him. Next time I have a chance, I will head to the village where Mr. Wang lived and see if I can track him down.

Re: Help for Identifying Japanese Painting Artist Signature
It's signed 雲林 which is the Japanese surname Kumobayashi. The meaning is "cloud forest". This can be easily confused with Yunlin county in Taiwan (Yunlin being how it's romanized from Chinese). This is sometimes a Japanese given name, Unrin (pronunciation borrowed into Japanese from Chinese). The ch...

These old "fang zhuanshu" or "square seal script" characters are always tough to decipher. There are over about 30,000 of them. Not all of the descendants of these characters are still in common use today. Also, there are often upwards of 20 variants of each zhuanshu character. I have several specia...

Re: Will I be defacing an antique if I paint this?
That is a nice guardian lioness - very unique, as I have not seen one in that style/pose before. Too bad you don't have the complete set. If you told me that you bought this 20+ years ago, I would say the likelihood of it being a real antique was higher. Around the year 2000, they kind of started to...

Re: Picture into a scroll?
The total length will be over 5 feet with the top and bottom panels of the scroll. If you provide a longer image, I can make everything longer. I am just limited to about 68cm paper panel width, as the finished wall scroll must fit in a 36" mailing tube if bound for the USA via air mail. The length ...

Re: I need my tattoo verified please!!
There are about 30 times more Chinese people than Japanese people in the world. You will encounter far more native Chinese people in the USA (except in Hawaii). You'll need to be ready to explain it to both. This reads very similarly in both languages. The uphill battle is that we have this unusual ...

Re: I need my tattoo verified please!!
I presume what you meant this to say is a suggestion of reverence to God. This was one of the older English definitions of "fear". The problem is, the antiquated definition of fear and the common modern definition are quite different. So, you can say that your tattoo means, "fear god" or even "fear ...

The original one (not the one you titled "reverse") is the correct orientation. The large characters say 神風 ("kami kaze" or "divine wind"). This is written from right-to-left as ancient Japanese was (modern Japanese is written left-to-right, like English). It would take me a while to translate the s...
