University of Chicago Motto

I have been told by what I believe to be a trust worthy source that the image below is a 'rendition' of the the University of Chicago's motto: "Crescat scientia; vita excolatur" or "Let knowledge increase; life is being perfected." Still, before I even consider putting this on my body or start think...

While I did not expect the rush order, it is not an unpleasant surprise and I have no problem paying for it. Thank you, I can't wait to see the scrolls!

Cool, there is no hurry though. I was just curious since you haven't given me a bill yet.

Hi, again. I just wanted to check in and make sure that the package was received in China since that tracker says it was delivered.

I am definitely interested. It is also cool how you encountered the calligraphy. I have to see if the Buddha is coming up North soon.

Getting procedural slack at the post office, that is a job perk I can get behind. If only there was some way to get such power at the DMV.

I just shipped the package. The tracking code is "EG 263731276 US".

I just went to the post office and they told me that U.S. customs would need the Chinese address in English. Could you give me the English version?

I like your idea for the two-tone panel with the lines for the Korean piece and would like to go with that. For the Mongolian piece on the blue silk, I would still like the gold panels, even if they are thinner, because of the blue and gold colored nature of the gift. I am fine with the extra cost o...

Scroll mounting

Hello Gary, I would like to have you mount two scrolls for me if you can. The first is a vertical 11'' by 24'' Mongolian calligraphy (on the left in the image). The second is a vertical 13'' by 26'' Korean Hangul calligraphy (on the right in the image). I would like to have them mounted as vertical ...

Thanks for the quick reply. I figured as much about Quốc Ngữ and agree about brush calligraphy's ability to render western characters. I'm still curious though, most calligraphers I have found who do Quốc Ngữ are very young, in their mid to late 20s, and Quốc Ngữ calligraphy seems equally young. The...

Error during purchase

Hi, I just wanted to inform you that I seem to be getting the message "Fatal error: Call to undefined function geoip_record_by_name() in /home/gwest9/public_html/vsadmin/inc/ipcountry.php on line 4" when I try to add items to my cart. This definitely could be interfering with people's ability to ord...

Vietnamese Chữ Quốc Ngữ Calligrapghy

Hello, I was wondering if you would be carrying Chữ Quốc Ngữ (Vietnamese in Roman characters) calligraphy or knew of any other online source ? I have found a few sites, such as http://www.ngocthanh-calligraphy.com , but they all seem to be defunct or non-responsive. Chữ Nôm (Vietnamese in Chinese ch...

Hi again Gary. I was wondering if you still had the scrolls from image n3189.jpg or n3179.jpg for sale as I would be interested in buying one of them?

I guess I will go with the one you described as a composite. Though if you are going through some Mawangdui translations with side by side original text, they may be presented out of the traditional order. In the version I am looking at, 80 and 81 come after 66 and before 67. There also seems to be ...

I would prefer the Guodian, but I am not sure that chapter 81 is in that text since the Guodian bamboo slips are missing chapters (or the latter texts have added chapters). If it is not included, I would be perfectly contented and satisfied with the Mawangdui.

I understand what you are saying about the translation. Of the ones I posted, the top is Guodian-based and the bottom is Mawangdui-based. Still they seem mostly the same to me with the Guodian sounding more poetic, though that is most likely because the translator is also an accomplished English poe...

I would prefer the version from the Mawangdui text found in 73 as that is the translation I turn to for accuracy. I still end up reading a more popular translation often, so I could go with that if that if necessary but I don't know what the source text is.

Chapter 81 of the Dao-de Jing

Could you have the traditional last chapter of the Dao-de Jing put on a wall scroll? It is usually labeled as Chapter 81 but some translations reorder the chapters. I have included two translations of the text just to make sure we are on the same page... chapter... whatever. True words aren't charmi...

Preview of Islamic Xinjiang Caligraphy

So your section on calligraphy of Islamic terms says you could give a preview of some future items you might have and I would be very interested to see that. I recently got a chance to see some Islamic art at a Hui Chinese restaurant in San Francisco, a city where there are a surprising number of ha...

Just for the record I and a small host of others I know would be interested in such a piece. Laozi on his Ox is such a great depiction of the irreverence that Daoism often conveys and would be great to remind one daily not to take themselves too seriously.
