Heroic Spirit

China yīng qì

英氣 is a way to write heroic spirit in Chinese.

This may be an arrogant thing to hang on your wall.

Heroic Spirit / Heroism

China háo qì
Heroic Spirit / Heroism Vertical Wall Scroll

豪氣 is heroic spirit or heroism in Chinese and old Korean Hanja.

This might come across as a bit arrogant to hang on your wall.

Heroic Spirit / Great Ambition

China xióng xīn
Japan yuushin
Heroic Spirit / Great Ambition Vertical Wall Scroll

雄心 is the Chinese characters and Japanese Kanji for great ambition, lofty aspiration, or heroic spirit.

Warrior Soul / Heroic Spirit

China yǒng shì jīng shén
Warrior Soul / Heroic Spirit Vertical Wall Scroll

This can be translated as the warrior's spirit or warrior's soul. The first two characters can be translated as "warrior" or literally "brave soldier/man" although some will translate this word as "hero." Therefore, this is also how to say "heroic spirit."

The second two characters mean vigor, vitality, drive, spirit, mind, heart, mental essence and psychological component. Basically "your soul."

We have two versions of this phrase. The only difference is the first two and last two characters are swapped. The version here suggests that you admire or like the idea of the spirit of a warrior. The other version suggests that you are the warrior or hero.

Active Duty Military

Person on Active Duty
China xiàn yì jūn rén
Japan geneki gunjin
Active Duty Military Vertical Wall Scroll

現役軍人 means "Active Duty Soldier" or literally "Active Duty Military Person."

This title is a great way to show your pride in being an active duty member of the armed forces.

The first two characters mean "active duty" and the second two characters can be translated as "military personnel," "soldier," or "serviceman" (it is unisex, so male or female is not indicated).

Bravery / Courage

Courage in the face of Fear
China yǒng gǎn
Japan yuu kan
Bravery / Courage Vertical Wall Scroll

勇敢 is about courage is bravery in the face of fear. You do the right thing even when it is hard or scary. When you are courageous, you don't give up. You try new things. You admit mistakes. This kind of courage is the willingness to take action in the face of danger and peril.

勇敢 can also be translated as: braveness, valor, heroic, fearless, boldness, prowess, gallantry, audacity, daring, dauntless and/or courage in Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. This version of bravery/courage can be an adjective or a noun. The first character means bravery and courage by itself. The second character means "daring" by itself. The second character just emphasizes the meaning of the first but adds an idea that you are not afraid of taking a dare, and you are not afraid of danger.

勇敢 is about brave behavior versus the mental state of being brave. You'd more likely use this to say, "He fought courageously in the battle," rather than "He is very courageous."

Courage to do what is right

China jiàn yì yǒng wéi
Courage to do what is right Vertical Wall Scroll

Fidelity Honor Courage

China xìn yì zūn yán yǒng qì
Fidelity Honor Courage Vertical Wall Scroll

This is a word list that was requested by a customer. Word lists are not that common in Chinese but we've put this one on the best order/context to make it as natural as possible.

We used the "honor" that leans toward the definition of "dignity" since that seemed like the best match for the other two words.

Please note: These are three two-character words. You should choose the single-column format when you get to the options when you order this selection. The two-column option would split one word or it would be arranged with four characters on one side and two on the other.

Soldier / Private

China shì bīng
Soldier / Private Vertical Wall Scroll

士兵 means "Soldier" but more specifically, a rank-and-file soldier (a private or troop - you could say a ground-pounder). Our other entry for "solider / serviceman" is probably better for a wall scroll (since someday, you will be promoted).

Note: In Japanese, they use these characters in opposite order to create the same meaning word. In that order, it's pronounced "heishi" in Japanese. Just let us know if you want it in Japanese Kanji order when you place your order.

Soldier / Serviceman

China jūn rén
Japan gun jin

軍人 means "Soldier" or literally "Military Person." This can also be translated as, "military personnel," "soldier," or "serviceman" (it is unisex, so male or female is not indicated).

This Japanese title can mean, "great man," "heroic figure," or "remarkable character." You would be giving someone a great honor by presenting this wall scroll to them as a gift.

Eishin-Ryu

Japan ei shin ryuu
Eishin-Ryu Vertical Wall Scroll

英信流 is the Japanese martial arts term, Eishin-ryu. This can also be pronounced Hidenobu-ryu. The direct meaning is something like, hero faith school (or school of heroic faith).

Zhang Fei

China zhāng fēi
Japan chou hi
Zhang Fei Vertical Wall Scroll

張飛 is the name of General Zhang Fei, of the Shu Kingdom. He was blood-brother of Liu Bei in the semi-historical novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms." Zhang Fei is famous for his heroic and fearsome fighting and his love of wine.

In Japanese, this can be the name Chouhi.

Hero

China yīng xióng
Japan ei yuu
Hero Vertical Wall Scroll

英雄 is the best way to write hero in Chinese and Japanese - especially for calligraphy. 英雄 is also the name of the Chinese movie titled Hero starring Jet Li.

The first character means brave (it can also mean British or English but not in this case).
The second character means heroic but also suggests a male person.
My Japanese dictionary also defines this as "a great man."

Ardent / Fierce

China liè
Japan retsu
Ardent / Fierce Vertical Wall Scroll

This Chinese word means ardent; intense; fierce; stern; upright; to give one's life for a noble cause.

In another context, this character can refer to one's exploits or achievements.

In Buddhist context, this is burning, fierce, virtuous and/or heroic.

While technically, it had the same meaning in Japanese, it's usually a female given name, Retsu in Japanese these days.

Extreme Faithfulness

Japan tei retsu
Extreme Faithfulness Vertical Wall Scroll

貞烈 is the Japanese Kanji for, "Extreme Faithfulness."

The first Kanji means "firm adherence to one's principles," chastity (of a woman), chaste, etc.

The second Kanji means ardent, intense, fierce, stern, upright, to give one's life for a noble cause, exploits, achievements, virtuous, and in some contexts, heroic.

Now you get the idea why this refers to someone who is extremely faithful (to a cause, themselves, their religious beliefs, or their philosophy.

Shaolin

Little Forest
China shǎo lín
Japan sho rin
Shaolin Vertical Wall Scroll

The Shaolin monks of China have been practicing the art of Kung Fu for thousands of years. While there are many schools of Kung Fu in China, Shaolin are one of the more religiously devout and disciplined.

The title of Shaolin actually refers to a specific Buddhist monastery. It should be noted that the Shaolin were famous in China long before the Kung Fu TV show. Their fame in China is due to the monks' heroic and swift rescue an emperor during the Tang Dynasty. Most Chinese people are not keenly aware of the Kung Fu TV show, and have no idea who David Carradine is or anything about his character, Kwai Chang Caine.

Note: The literal meaning of these two characters is "little forest."

The fame of the Shaolin has spread all over Asia, as even though this is a Chinese title, the same characters are used in Japanese with the same meaning.

All of our calligraphy wall scrolls are handmade.

When the calligrapher finishes creating your artwork, it is taken to my art mounting workshop in Beijing where a wall scroll is made by hand from a combination of silk, rice paper, and wood.
After we create your wall scroll, it takes at least two weeks for air mail delivery from Beijing to you.

Allow a few weeks for delivery. Rush service speeds it up by a week or two for $10!

When you select your calligraphy, you'll be taken to another page where you can choose various custom options.

A professional Chinese Calligrapher

Professional calligraphers are getting to be hard to find these days.
Instead of drawing characters by hand, the new generation in China merely type roman letters into their computer keyboards and pick the character that they want from a list that pops up.

There is some fear that true Chinese calligraphy may become a lost art in the coming years. Many art institutes in China are now promoting calligraphy programs in hopes of keeping this unique form of art alive.

Trying to learn Chinese calligrapher - a futile effort

Even with the teachings of a top-ranked calligrapher in China, my calligraphy will never be good enough to sell. I will leave that to the experts.

A high-ranked Chinese master calligrapher that I met in Zhongwei

The same calligrapher who gave me those lessons also attracted a crowd of thousands and a TV crew as he created characters over 6-feet high. He happens to be ranked as one of the top 100 calligraphers in all of China. He is also one of very few that would actually attempt such a feat.
