Custom calligraphy

We'll be happy to translate a simple phrase into Mandarin Chinese for you. We can also do your favorite Bible verse, or Chinese philosophy. If you need a long phrase, poem, or song lyrics translated, there may be a translation charge (we'll let you know before we do it).

Custom calligraphy

Post by vjsharm » Dec 9, 2012 4:45 am

Hi. I am interested in 3 scrolls similar (and could include) to the one done with Joshua verse. I would be interested in having them look similar in amount of calligraphy on the scroll and as I am not familiar with how calligraphy works would need assistance in planning how long the verses would be that I would choose. Thank you for your help.

I think the starting point would be telling me which specific verses you are interested in. I can then give you some character counts to see if they will be of comparable size.

Generally speaking, if the length in English is close, the Chinese character count for the same verses will be also.

Okay - here are a few to choose from:

Psalm 62:7 On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

Psalm 121: I lift up on my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

My final objective would be to have three screens identical in size and every other characteristic except for the calligraphy. The finished size would be approximately 40-45cm wide and 180cm tall. I'm not good at visualizing so perhaps I need to have less calligraphy on each screen and maybe should stick to something simpler like a name of God i.e.: The Lord My Shepherd, The Lord My Banner, The Lord My Redeemer What do you suggest?

Thanks for your help.

Psalms
62:7 In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.
62:7 我的拯救、我的榮耀、都在乎神。我力量的磐石、我的避難所、都在乎神。
27 characters.

121:1 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
121:2 My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
121:1 我要向山舉目。我的幫助從何而來。
121:2 我的幫助從造天地的耶和華而來。
28 characters for these two verses.

You're just 1-character difference for these two verses, so that's as good as it gets for matching sizes.

Do you have a third piece (another verse) in mind, or just these two?

Yes I was still thinking about the Joshua verse you have on line. How do the two I sent earlier compare character-wise with that one?

Joshua 24:15
至於我和我家我們必定事奉耶和華

This one is not very long actually. Just 15 characters. We can still use the same sized paper to make the scrolls all the same dimensions. However, this one might look a little sparse compared to the other two.

I'll set it all up if you want it. Otherwise, maybe a slightly longer verse?

After looking again at the scroll on the web site with the Joshua verse I do like the fewer characters so what about shortening the verses I sent earlier to be more in line with the Joshua one. Such as:

In God is my salvation and my glory

My help cometh from the Lord, who made heaven and earth

And yes if you could set it up so I have a visual. I am very interested in having this done - just want to make sure it looks right. Also perhaps some suggestions on different ways they can be matted (I noticed when doing my daughter's name there were different additions that could be made to make the piece look more formal or regal). These will be going on a long wall in our living room so I would want them to be especially handsome but yet contemporary, not frilly.

Thanks again for your assistance!

Hi Gary. I don't think I ever received a response to this thread on the 3 Bible verses. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks...

I thought I answered this, I guess it got missed. Sorry about that.

Here's the three verses (with the second one clipped to just the first half)...

Psalms 121:2
My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
我的幫助從造天地的耶和華而來

Psalms 62:7
In God is my salvation and my glory...
我的拯救我的榮耀都在乎神
http://www.orientaloutpost.com/options.php?cname=Psalms+62:7+first+part&cimg=25105+30340+25327+25937+25105+30340+27054+32768+37117+22312+20046+31070

Joshua 24:15
至於我和我家我們必定事奉耶和華
http://www.orientaloutpost.com/options.php?cname=+Joshua+24:15&cimg=33267+26044+25105+21644+25105+23478+25105+20497+24517+23450+20107+22857+32822+21644+33775

As far as mounting colors, I like this combination of ivory silk with a copper silk inner frame...
Joshua 24:15 - This House Serves the LORDJoshua 24:15 - This House Serves the LORD

If you want to frame this, I like black mat contrasting the lighter-colored paper of the calligraphy. The natural grass fiber paper is my favorite for either of these plans.

Dear Gary,
Thank you for your reply. I didn't fully understand about the second verse being clipped to the first half. Is there not enough characters in that verse to fill a whole scroll? My goal is to have 3 scrolls in all the same size that I can hang along a long wall. I like your suggestions on colors and need to think about having them framed. I imagine that drives up shipping costs and the import tax here in Switzerland. Let me know about the second verse and I can add to it if we need more characters. Thanks.

Hi Gary. I don't believe I received a reply from my previous message. Is what I am asking something you can and are interested in doing or should I look elsewhere? Thanks for letting me know if I need to do something different.

Sorry, it looks like this topic got temporarily buried by a spam attack. After I cleaned up the spam, a lot of topics get marked as read. I thought the topic was finished after my last post, so I wasn't really looking for a new reply anyway. Oops!

The problem is, the whole verse would be too many characters. If you want the characters on all scrolls to be about the same size, we need to match up the character counts. The first half of that verse will be a similar number of characters as the other two.

I've never had a customer report having to pay any VAT or import duties in Switzerland. Generally speaking, hand-painted artwork is duty free. Once in a while, there's an issue in Italy and the UK. The rest of western Europe is no problem.

Gary,
Thanks for your reply. Let's just do the first half of the long verse then so all 3 scrolls would be similar in character count. Could you do a mock up of how that would look? Hopefully that will be it and then I can order these. Thanks so much.

If you follow each of the three links that I provided (one for each verse), you will see a mockup after you select your calligrapher. The will automatically change as you select different colors of silk, different mounting options, etc. That way you can get a good idea of what you are going to receive. Done worry if there are slight length differences between the verses in the dimensions shown in the mockups. I'll have the calligrapher correct and make the sizes match in real life.
