Re: Picture into a scroll?

I own a huge Giclee fine art printer, so I can do this for you. I would prefer that the image have at least 300dpi in the size you want output. The absolute minimum for a good product is 150dpi. Do not blow it up to that dpi if it is currently smaller. Just see how many pixels wide the image is, div...

Re: Tattoo

The reason I went out of my way to talk to some Chinese Christians is because this was not sounding very natural in general Chinese. I wanted to know how they would say it, and the response was, "We'd never say it that way." They did say "Jesus is my Savior" made sense within the realm of Chinese Ch...

Re: Chinese do get tattoos in mainland, but not what you exp

Maybe it's time that I update this topic. It has been 7 years since I wrote the original post. You can now find a lot more tattoo parlors in mainland China. And in turn, you can find a lot more Chinese people with tattoos. Almost all of them are in their 20s or early 30s. I don't think I have ever s...

Re: Tattoo

OK, I talked to a couple Chinese and one Japanese Christian. None of them said this phrase was typical in their religion. It was far more likely that someone would write, "Jesus is my Savior." Here's a few versions of that phrase: http://www.orientaloutpost.com/shufa.php?q=Jesus+is+My+Savior If you ...

Re: Can't identify Japanese Art Vase

Yes, the enclosed document is written in Japanese, not Chinese. Oddly, the box is all in Kanji (Chinese characters used in Japanese), this makes it look old or classic, especially with the appearance of the rest of the box.

Vases are not my thing, so I can't tell you much about that part.

Re: How to exchange money from Dollars to RMB

Unless you have a weird bank, you can just go to any ATM in China and withdraw RMB from your USA bank account. The exchange rate is better than what you get from those rip-off currency exchange booths at the airport. If your ATM card has a MasterCard symbol, you are OK. This also keeps you from carr...

Please use a trackable delivery service. If you are trying to save money and are going to use air mail, please use registered air mail, or buy the insurance so there is a way to track it. All registered mail has a registered mail item number. We can put a trace on this at China Post. But if you sen...

Re: Can someone tell me what these characters are for?

Those read 纹银 in Simplified Chinese. It must be rather new, as an old piece would have 紋銀, which is the Traditional Chinese.

This just means, "fine silver."

Re: Any help on Chinese art made of butterfly wings

All I do sometimes is work on translations of titles etc. I kind of already did half of that job for you, since I gave you what I could about the background and date. For $10, all you would get in addition is a romanization of the artist's name (and Chinese text if you want it for a Google search). ...

Re: Eleven scrolls for mounting December 2015

My belated update: Here's what we've been doing: The original style of mounting using the "paste up" method. We usually use heat-activated adhesive sheets, but with the way your artwork was getting sticky when heated, this was not an option. Yours was assembled with wet paste on a board (later peele...

Re: Any help on Chinese art made of butterfly wings

I've seen these from time to time in the mainland. It could have been created in Taiwan as well. The year 1977 was just post Cultural Revolution, so people could start making artwork again. The inscription looks like 1977 to me, and art from 1957 would be unlikely from mainland China (except portrai...

OK, will do. FedEx does make things difficult for customers this way. Extra paperwork and higher cost. I usually just choose EMS (Express Mail) or regular Priority Mail International. My friend at the Beijing international post office told me to just check the box for "documents" and then say it's C...

Re: Help with translation for a tattoo ASAP

The whole verse is: 28:20 凡 我 所 吩 咐 你 們 的 、 都 教 訓 他 們 遵 守 我 就 常 與 你 們 同 在 、 直 到 世 界 的 末 了 。 You kind of want 我就常與你們同在, but this sounds a little corny as a tattoo. Maybe corny is not the word, but not natural. This is really tricky. There is a common issue where things are lost in translation or yiel...

Cool. I am happy to help. I can provide pretty good quality, and very good price (since in the USA, some charge $200 per wall scroll). However, we are not fast - especially not over the month we are closed for Chinese New Years. I hope you liked the knobs. Those were an experiment I tried using waln...

Re: Is this real Jade?

The fake jade in China is getting really good. Also, reproductions using cheap jade, made to look like old relics and antiques are common. You really need an expert to authenticate this. Jade is not my thing, and an expert will have to see it in person to make a determination. Here are some suggesti...

He's really retired now from what I hear. His son was thinking about taking over the family business, but I have not seen him at the Beijing art market in a long time. I will check with Beijing. We were trying to get them done before we closed for Chinese New Years (early Feb thru Feb 29). The complication made that not happen.

The last comment was about how they seemed sandy on one side, and wanted to stick to the press plates when heated.

Re: Scroll Mounting Request

I will experiment when your scrolls arrive at my USA studio. I'll see what looks best, and make sure they are heavy enough to keep the scroll straight. We used good-quality paper when we build the wall scrolls, so our's tend not to curl or have any "memory" that makes them want to roll back up. Ther...
